Abstract
This study investigated the impact of adding functional ingredients on the antimicrobial activity of customized cosmetics, considering the environment in which these cosmetics are formulated. We conducted the study by manufacturing samples with confirmed antimicrobial activity in the base cream, which were then sealed and then stored at room temperature for 30 days. Subsequently, 13 types of functional ingredients were individually added to produce a total of 13 different samples. Changes in preservative efficacy were analyzed for these 13 samples compared to the base cream sample, along with other attributes such as texture and pH. The test strains used for evaluating preservative efficacy included a bacteria mixture of S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and a fungi mixture of C. albicans, A. brasiliensis. The results showed that each of the 13 samples with added ingredients exhibited varying degrees of preservative efficacy compared to the base cream. Notably, the sample with 1,3- propanediol showed an overall increase in preservative efficacy, whereas sugar components tended to reduce preservative efficacy against the fungi mixture. In addition to added ingredients, preservative efficacy against diverse microbial species was significantly different dependent on pH, moisture, existence of organic matters during the process of cosmetic formulation. This study suggests that the preservative activity in cosmetics is
influenced by multiple factors, including the physicochemical properties of cosmetic ingredients as well as the formulation process conditions. However, further detailed studies are needed to confirm the effects of specific ingredients, and the findings of this study imply its utility as foundational data for designing preservative prescriptions in products.
